Global Challenge Winter School 2024

MIRAI will be conducting the onsite “Global Challenge Winter School” in November 2024 with the financial support from Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation. The main venue is the European Institute for Japanese Studies at Stockholm School of Economics in Stockholm, and they will be the host institution for this program.

This program is designed especially to attract participation of early career researchers (ECRs) from diverse fields including humanities and social sciences, and it will be providing various lectures, discussions and company visits relating the below four “MIRAI Global Challenges” which we are setting up as the core for the academic collaboration in the third phase of MIRAI.

  • Health and an ageing population (UN-SDG #3)
  • Climate adaptation, disaster and risk management and prevention (UN-SDG #13)
  • Resilient cities and communities (UN-SDG #11)
  • Materials for energy conversion and storage (UN-SDG #7)

For more details, please read carefully the below “Call for Participation”. Application deadline will be decided by each MIRAI member university. Application must be through each MIRAI member university, using the designated online registration form. Please contact MIRAI Project Managers at your university for internal application/selection process.

Exploring the Multi-facets of AI

Credits: 7,5 ECTS
Format: Hybrid; Virtual sessions + a full day of workshop on November 17, physically in Umeå, co-location in Sophia University.
Time: October 2 – November 17:
– 1 hour Introductory virtual session on October 2, 9:00 Swedish time, 16:00 Japanese time
– Virtual sessions during the week 40-44 (details will be announced later)
– Full-day Workshop on the 17th of November, physically in Umeå, co-location in Sophia University.

Content:

This course will cover multiple disciplines in AI, including societal aspects, legal aspects, and technical aspects. Learning outcomes include:

  • describe the most common AI methods in reasoning, machine learning, and robotics
  • analyze key societal and legal aspects of AI applied in various real contexts and domains
  • categorize a given real-world problem and choose appropriate AI methods
  • getting aware of how to apply relevant law to the development of AI applications
    • AI Act, GDPR – and Japanese side tech regulations
  • critical reflections on which key-players play which role in the creation of AI solutions
  • discuss ethical, societal, business, and sustainability issues related to AI

Entry Requirements & Selection

Selection procedure (ordered by priority):

  • Applicants should fulfill the stated requirements (PhD or Post-docs from MIRAI 2.0 partner universities and fluent in English)
  • Background (country, subject) – we strive for diversity
  • Latest degree grade average
  • In case of a tie situation, the underrepresented gender will be selected

Gerontechnology for health, participation, and quality of life

Credits: 4,5 ECTS
Time: 27 November-13 December 2023
Format: The course is conducted through lectures and group discussions as well as collaborative work in pair or small group, through online platforms. Course meetings on Mondays and Wednesdays 17:00-20:00 Japan, 9:00-12:00 Sweden.

Content:

This course will discuss gerontechnology in terms of concepts, applications, and impact on older people. Content include:

  • digitalization and digitalized products and services
  • older persons, including their needs, interests, preferences, skills, and experiences of technology
  • health, participation, and quality of life in digital societies
  • research methods
  • user-centered approach
  • co-production
  • ethical, legal, and social issues

Entry Requirements & Selection

Selection procedure (ordered by priority):

1. Students registered in a PhD programme or Postdocs at MIRAI 2.0 member universities.
2. Other applicants: Admission based on the number of credits at graduate level (2 ECTS credits in Sweden is equivalent to 1 credit in Japan). The applicants will be selected randomly in the case of equal credits.

A strive for diversity in disciplines/academic fields and an equal number of students from Sweden and from Japan. English is the medium of instruction and examination.

Maximum number of participants: 30 (15 from Sweden and 15 from Japan).
